Five features of a good security door

Security doors are an important deterrent against intruders and can help to protect your home from burglars. In order to provide the most effective security, the door will need to incorporate a number of features.

Material

Firstly, the door will need to be made of a strong material, such as steel. There is no point in having a securely fitted door if a burglar could simply smash their way through it. Security doors will be fully tested to ensure that they can withstand a sustained attack from an intruder armed with a blunt object. You will therefore be sure that the door will act as your first line of defence.

Frame

The frame will also be considerably stronger than an ordinary frame. It should surround the whole door and will be made of a similarly strong material such as metal. Most domestic door frames are made of plastic or wood, which can provide a weak point for a criminal to attack with a crowbar. The frame on a security door will not allow for such an attack.

Hinges

The fixings on a security door should also be stronger than a standard door. In particular, the door should have heavy-duty hinges with non-removable pins. There is not much point in having a strong door if it can simply be forced or taken off its hinges.

Locks

The locks are vital to the security of a door. It should have both heavy-duty keyed locks, preferably with a triple-contact mechanism, and a deadbolt to add to the security. It should not be possible for a criminal to pick the lock and the addition of the deadbolt will add to the security.

Screen

Finally, a good screen can make a huge difference to the effectiveness of a security door. A screen made from stainless steel mesh will allow light to filter through while preventing an intruder from getting inside. It will resist being cut and will absorb any blows, protecting the door itself. A screen has the added advantage of protecting your home against insects and bushfires.

A good security door will protect your home from criminals - but more importantly, it will stop them from targeting your property in the first place. As soon as they see the door, they will know that it is not worth the effort to get through. Just get in touch with a security door installer to improve the safety and security of your family.
